Did you attend the ‘How to Create Compelling Characters’ class? You’ll love this complementary workshop and gives you an opportunity to apply your newfound skills. There are only 12 spots available, so register now!

In the previous class, I had assigned a 5-page assignment meant to highlight character. In this workshop, we will be discussing 3 of the 12 pieces from attendees during this workshop. Attendees will provide feedback on the two pieces. The pieces shown during workshop will be chosen solely on first come, first serve. So be sure to submit ASAP!

Separately, I will give written feedback to all 12 people who attend this workshop.

How does the workshop work?
Each submitted piece will be given a total 35 minutes for feedback. 8 minutes will be spent reading the piece. 22 minutes will be spent discussing the piece. Each attendee will give roughly 1-2 minutes for feedback; I will also be giving my feedback. During this time, the author cannot speak or give context.

During the last 5 minutes of the allotted time, the author can unmute themselves. They can use these 5 minutes however they’d like, whether that’s to give context on their piece or brainstorm with the group.

FAQ

Why workshop format?
I wanted to design a workshop that was similar to that of a college writing program. In that, workshops are meant to elevate the writer’s craft through receiving straight-forward feedback from their peers. However, and more importantly, it puts them in a position to give feedback in return. This was absolutely essential since it allows them to read writing analytically and apply knowledge to their work.

Why isn’t the author allowed to speak during feedback?
This is supposed to imitate real-life reading, in which the author can’t give context on their piece. This allows us to provide accurate comments on what was unclear or plot-holey.

Can I request my pieces be critiqued during the workshop, even though I was late submitting?
Unfortunately, no. I try to make it pretty fair by keeping it to whomever submits their pieces first to the Google Drive. I want to encourage people to submit their work on the due date, so that I have adequate time to provide thoughtful feedback in the week prior to the workshop.
